//-->IntroductionA horizontally opposed engine also known as a boxer engine consists of pistons that move towardeach other in a horizontal direction much like boxers throwing punches.We can name three types of engines:---Inline enginesV- enginesBoxer enginesIf we compare that three types of engines, we easily can find a lot ofadvantagesof using the boxerengine, such as:- Low center of gravity, and that gives better stability- Low vibrations- Compact size- Very good durability- 3rdgeneration is environmentally friendly, it can generate impressive amount of power froma minimal amount of petrolDisadvantages:- It requires extensive costs for production and development- Today there are only two companies in the world that produce boxer engine ( It’s GermanPorsche and Japanese Subaru)HistorySubaru has been producing the boxer engine for more than forty years. Shinroku Momose is theinventor of boxer engine, he also was responsible for pushing development of boxer engine. Todayhe is regarded as something of a legend. He used expensive aluminium to construct engine blocks tomake them lighter. Aluminium alloy gave approximately 15 percent lighter than other inline four-cylinder engines of the same class.In 1966 the first Japanese boxer engine was complete. It names “Subaru one 1000( it was firstgeneration)”In the forty five years since the first boxer engine was produced has designed second generation ofthis engineThe third generation was introduced in 1996 and it names EJ25And the latest engine is FB20.ProductionLet’s take a look how the engine is produced and assembled. The process begins by casting thealuminium block. Next the compact blocks are sent to the assembly line after being polished andwashed. The boxer engine assembly process is complex and requires much time and effort. Theengine consists of a large number of parts because the pistons are located on each side of the engineand it means that it takes two rimes as long to assemble the heads compared to other types ofengines. For greater quality parts are controlled using QR code system.As a curiosity we would like to say that Subaru uses high technological AGV’s ( Automated GuidedVehicles) to deliver parts to production line. The assembly of a single- engine takes approximatelyfour and a half hours, and Subaru produces 14000 third generation engines per month.Subaru has manufactured more than 11 million horizontally opposed engines for the global market.
